Term 2 Week 8

We had lots of fun with our grandparents and other whanau who came to join us for Kaumatua Kuia Day. They helped us draw stars to illustrate our poem "Kapokapo whetū iti" and we showed them our string games and our favourite iPad apps. Quayshana took a selfie with her Poppa:

We shared our milk and bananas at brain break, then took our manuhiri to visit our buddy class, Room 4 where they got a chance to check out our blog.
After lunch Honey used our junior scrabble game to practise some spelling.

Term 2 Week 7

Everybody in Room 1 came to school on Wednesday and Thursday! Mrs Bingham bought us some chocolate fish on Friday to celebrate.

We have been learning about Matariki this week. First we wrote down all the things we already know and we knew a lot! Then we asked some questions like "How did Matariki begin?" and "How old are the stars?" We read some stories about Matariki to look for answers. Our favourite is the Seven Stars of Matariki which you can listen to here: The Seven Stars of Matariki.

On Tuesday Mrs Bingham gave us some string and we learned how to make the 'Cat's Whiskers'. It was quite tricky to learn but we all felt proud when we finally got it. We took our string home and learnt to make lots of other string patterns:

We watched a cool dominoes video just for fun. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Week 6

We had a very wet week so lots of people stayed home from school. Despite the weather, Room 1 had 100% attendance on Thursday this week.! Maybe it was because we knew we were doing art with Miss Nicola in Room 7. Mrs Bingham came and took some photos:

We also had fun making movies on Dvolver. This is a link to the one Maia and Mokonuiarangi made - Maia and Mokonuiarangi's movie

For writing we wrote about a time we felt scared. Troy H wrote a scary story with a happy ending. This is what he wrote:

On the weekend I stayed home by myself and at night I watched Ghost Rider. He was cool but suddenly I heard a knock and I looked at the back of me and I got a fright. It was only an old man.
"You scared me.What are you doing here?"
"Nothing. Are your parents here?"
"No, they went on a trip."
"So is it just you here?"
"Yes, it is just me."
"Oh, okay. Bye. Have a nice weekend."
"You too."

Term 2 Week 5

The Starfish reading group read a story in graphic novel format and were inspired to create their own comic strips using the iPads. Here is our story The 3 bears:
We were very disappointed that it rained on Friday afternoon and assembly was cancelled. It was our turn to be on stage. Hopefully we will get our chance to shine next week!

Term 2 Week 4

We enjoyed Pink Ribbon Day on Friday. Over $300 was donated to breast cancer research thanks to all the generous students, whanau and staff at Kaikohe West School. Whaea Sabrina organised a fabulous breakfast. We had fun making pink creations to wear on stage.
